Australian War Memorial

About Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial stands as a tribute to the individuals who served in the armed forces and affiliated organizations of Australia, commemorating their sacrifices and contributions in various conflicts associated with the Commonwealth of Australia. Additionally, it acknowledges the participation of personnel from the Australian colonies before the formation of the nation. Established in 1941, this memorial not only serves as a place for remembrance but also houses a comprehensive national military museum.

The Australian War Memorial is made up of three sections: the Commemorative Area (shrine) which contains the Hall of Memory housing the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, the museum’s galleries, and the Records Research Centre. Additionally, there is an open-air Sculpture Garden within the memorial grounds. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except on Christmas Day. Monuments and memorials found on Anzac Parade are managed independently by the National Capital Authority (NCA) and are not included in the Australian War Memorial.

What to do at Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial, which serves as the focal point for national remembrance, is undergoing a significant expansion of its galleries through a major Development Project. This expansion aims to share modern narratives of Australian service and the sacrifices made. To access the Memorial Galleries and attend the Last Post Ceremony, all visitors must obtain a timed ticket, which is free of charge. Visitors should make bookings for their complimentary tickets to ensure admission.

Visitors will still have the opportunity to explore significant sections of the Memorial, such as the Aircraft Hall, Hall of Valour, First World War Galleries, Second World War Galleries, and the Commemorative Area, which encompasses the Hall of Memory, Roll of Honour, and Pool of Reflection. However, the Discovery Centre and Conflicts 1945 to Today galleries are currently unavailable for access.
